Zang Pictures, Inc., was founded in 1999 to address themes of political and social concern through the medium of motion pictures. Drawing from the diverse experience of its founders, Zang Pictures approaches film production as a form of social and community activism, as well as an integral forum for artistic expression. Through its multimedia projects, Zang Pictures seeks to encourage works of specific Asian and Pacific Islander artists, writers and thinkers while dealing with topics surrounding contemporary Asian/Pacific experiences. Films such as Constructions, The Problem with Being, and future projects such as "A" is for America address issues specific to the above mentioned communities by offering perspectives on gender issues, urban life in the Pacific, identity stereotyping, and representation of Asian/Pacific Islanders through various media.
The Board of Directors, administrative officers, casts and crews associated with Zang Pictures, Inc., are composed of unpaid volunteers with the exception of commissioned professional representatives and musical talent. Thus, the organization can devote a majority of its resources to media production and project development. Zang Pictures values the tireless efforts of our all-volunteer staff and view its dedication as an asset to the company. As an all-volunteer run organization, company productions rely on the ideas and effort of all participants rather than on a small group of writers and producers.
Zang Pictures garners the support of the Pacific Islander community through its current and past productions. This support in the form of volunteer participation, financial contributions and in-kind donations draws primarily from members of the Pacific Islander communities in Hawaii and California.
Because of the company's all-volunteer status, the projects for which Zang Pictures is responsible not only represent the interests of the community, but also allow community members a certain level of participation in film production. Interested persons may become volunteer crewmembers and assistants, giving them direct access to discussion of social topics surrounding Asia and the Pacific, and motion picture production in general. The company draws its participants directly from the community. In this way, Zang productions serves a dual purpose for a broadly defined Pacific Islander community, acting as both a laboratory for media production and as a means of dialog concerning topics relevant to Asian/Pacific Islander communities.
